More than 50 percent by both volume and weight of the average physical structure and mechanics of all biological species on our planet consists of water”, Bucky Fuller writes in his last and most important work, Critical Path.

This fact is important to Rolfers if we compare this scientific data to the fact that humans’ structuring and internal organic equipment is over 60 percent water. We are hydraulically designed technologies.

Hydraulics is the branch of fluid mechanics dealing with the study of fluids in motion, and their use to perform work, usually constructed as unitary. The adjective hydraulic is defined as; of or relating to the forces exerted by fluids in motion. Hydrate is defined as; any crystalline substance (see report on connective tissue and myofascial systems by the Aspen Research Institute) formed by the union of a chemical with molecules of water in a definite ratio.

All structures consist of a balanced interaction between tensive and compressive forces. Nature services all her tension functions rigidly with three crystalline, maximum-cohesion bonds, flexibly hinged, variously viscous hydraulics. These are noncompressible, but being flexible, they distribute their loads evenly to all the surfaces of their triple-bonded (see Aspen Report) tensional-container systems. As long as the triple-bonded tensional crystalline’s containers are strong enough, the hydraulic structure (Us) will hold its tensionally predesigned, optimally extended shapes because the contained liquids which entirely fill the designed container, are noncompressible.

What I am pointing out here by way of Bucky’s scientific information is that we, as Rolfers, are re-hydrating tissue, so that gravity may bring the body to its pre designed possibility. Michael Salveson repeated this many times in class, though his own style of the work demonstrates clearly that he is actually preparing the individual’s structure to slowly make the transition from “out of gravity” to “into the gravitational field”, toward the hydraulic model.
