I’ve been interested to discover that 1986 is very much related to the theme of our connectedness, as understood from the ancient science of numerology. This is a way of looking at the Rolf Institute as if it were an individual, and its date of incorporation as the date of birth. This was May 27, 1971.

In numerology the evolution of each individual is measured in nine-year cycles. Nine years is considered a complete cycle because every number is involved. Each year within the cycle of nine years has its own number; and therefore, its own theme, according to the meaning of that number.

1986 is a 2 year for the Rolf Institute. The month and day of the birthday, 5 (May) and 27, are added together until there is a single number: 5 + 2 + 7 = 14, and then 1 + 4 = 5. This 5 is added to the single-digit total of the present year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24 = 6; 6 + 5 = 11 = 2.

2 is the number of relatedness, cooperation, connectedness. It is lunar in contrast to the solar 1. 2 is magnetic-receptive. It emphasizes heart feelings more than the head dominance of the 1.. In a universe where everything is connected to everything else, the 2 allows us to experience the reality of our connectedness. Relationship matters.

Last year, 1985, was a 1 year for the Rolf Institute, the beginning of a new nine year cycle. A 1 year is a time of new vision, new energy, new projects. There is often a fundamental shift in perspective as evolution moves to a higher turn on the spiral.

Each year brings a .new energy which awakens a particular theme of growth within the individual. There is set in motion a process of response, of learning, of integration and fulfillment. The actual degree of fulfillment, and the ease of integration is an expression of each individual’s ability to harmonize with the process.

In addition to the nine-year cycles of learning and growing, each individual has a lifetime numerological imprint which is seen as the path of his personal fulfillment. This involves the month, day and year of birth. May 27, 1971 becomes 5 + 2 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 32 = 5. The 5 is called the Life Path number and the 32/5 is the complete numerolical signature.

The Life Path number reflects the lifelong purpose of the individual. 5 is the number of freedom. The freedom to be that which one actually is. To be free from that which is false. There is the wonderful story of Michelangelo speaking of David, and saying, “I carved away all that was not David.”

There is also in the 5 an ingenious capacity for change, for adaptability. The 3 is the number of creative expression, and has a tremendous affinity for the voice, the arms and hands. And, of course, the 32/5 configuration is completed with the great capacity of the 2 to perceive and experience relationship.
