Will Johnson is on a decades-long exploration of Dr. Ida Rolf’s lesser-known legacy: her vision of structural integration not merely as a manual therapy profession, but a path toward evolutionary awakening. Drawing on personal experience beginning in the 1970s, Johnson argues that Rolf’s teachings contain two distinct elements – hands-on bodywork and a mystery school of somatic transformation centered on ‘The Line’. Johnson reflects on how psychedelic substances used in conjunction with exploring ‘Lined’ states can catalyze profound shifts in consciousness. Situating these experiences within broader contemplative and cultural contexts, including Subud, Buddhist breathwork, and rave culture, Johnson calls on the structural integration community to reclaim these transformational teachings for themselves.

Will Johnson, a Certified Rolfer with a practice on Canada’s Vancouver Island, is one of the most prolific authors in our Rotting community, having published a total of seven books. While his writings touch on topics from Buddhism to Sufism, they all relate to the body – or, more specifically, the body-mind-spirit-and are grounded in his experience as a Rolfer. He is one of the key people carrying forth and developing the mystical thread of Dr. Rolf’s life work, furthering our understanding of the potential of Rolfing® to be an evolutionary and consciousness-changing force. This conversation was carried out as an email dialogue. A review of one of Johnson’s books appears later in this issue.
