I have come to suspect that what people call energy work, or informational medicine, and what we call Structural Integration, will all end up being explained by the properties of the biological gel that forms the matrix for fascias, intra and extracellular matrices, basement membrane, ligaments, etc. This paper is an explanation of why I entertain this suspicion, followed by a few questions and caveats that this inquiry brings up.
My theoretical proposition stems from research conducted in two very different fields of inquiry. One research group is led by Fritz-Albert Popp, a biochemist in Germany, who has been following a lead on cellular photon output; the other research group has been working at the University of London on a perplexing problem in computer science?the quest for the perfect transformer between photon and electron signals. I’ve put together ideas gleaned from the two in a bit of an imaginative leap, but I think the assumptions I make do not strain the research.
Back in 1972 Dr. Fritz Popp(1) began his research on cellular metabolism. While doing this research his group began to pick up faint signals that they could not account for. Thinking this was some sort of energetic output from cellular metabolism they devised a new research strategy to explain what they were finding. Popp developed a piece of technology that could pick up this subtle signal, and to make a long story short, eventually discovered that it did not come from cellular metabolism, but was a very weak, yet highly coherent, photon beam that was emitted directly from DNA. When scientists find coherence in energy, rather than randomness as in sunlight, they understand that coherent energy as information. So Popp and his colleagues discovered that DNA was emitting information, and they have since spent their time discovering how to decode that information. They’ve found they can determine from such information streams not only what kind of organism they are monitoring, but also whether it is healthy or not, and they have proposed that this kind of information gleaning can be used in the food industry, among other places.
The next piece of research was reported in the December 2001 issue of Discover Magazine(2). It concerned a group at the University of London who had taken on the problem of discovering the perfect medium that could transform photonic signal to electronic signal and back again. Evidently the use of fiber optic cable to send signals was a great technology but it came with a major problem?once that light signal (photons) reached the copper wire of our houses or businesses, it had to be transmitted as an electron signal. Bits and bytes got lost or slowed, and this was hanging up communications. This group had finally discovered the perfect medium?a carbon-based organic gel. The same hyaluronic acid based gel that forms the matrix of fascias, intracellular and extracellular matrices, and all the other connective tissues in life forms. It turned out to be a difficult medium to use on computer chips, and I believe they’ve found something different to use by now, but what is of interest to us here is this fact that a carbon-based biological gel is the perfect transforming medium between photonic and electronic signals. Evolutionarily, it?s the goo that stuck little biological bits together to make the first cells.
Why is this of interest? We’ve just seen that DNA outputs information in photons (and we now understand DNA to be not just a grocery list, but a sequence of instructive regulatory genes whose effect is fascinatingly dependent upon environment(3)?) We know from medical research that animal tissues emit electronic signals and we have devices to measure output from hearts, brains, and other tissues. I cannot believe that this is all just coincidence. Our DNA is surrounded by this biological gel. All of our tissues are surrounded by some form of this biological gel. Is it really just the organ of form, or does it also have another job?that of making information from DNA available to all of the tissues of the body, and information from all of the tissues available to DNA? Is it an internal communication device? As well, it seems to be an external communication device?Popp has demonstrated that information from DNA can also be picked up outside the body.
An interesting book by Jeremy Narby(4) is an exploration into how shamans in the Amazon could find out intricate botanical knowledge by asking direct questions through use of the drugs ayahuasca and nicotine. The information these shamans came up with is the same information botanists from Western universities have come up with?but shamans have no labs, they simply ask the drug. To explain this, Narby eventually discovered the research of Fritz Popp. It seems that this photon information beam can be picked up by anything with DNA in it. The DNA is a receiver as well as a transmitter. This means that all of us have the potential to pick up information from any other life form on this planet, and vice versa. And most likely we are, we just don’t know how to notice and interpret the information. Narby says the shamans call their source ?the TV of the forest.? We could easily call it the information highway. The idea that direct communication between organisms occurs through DNA-emitted information streams could just as well go a long way to help explain how evolution works, but that?s a different exploration.
These two pieces of research led me to speculate that with Structural Integration we are enhancing structure, but we may also be providing another very important service?that of making sure the information decoding and transfer functions of fascias are in working order. My speculation brings up interesting questions, such as: if the fascias of a body are not hydrated, if they have a lot of collagen density and scar tissue, or if they lack mobility for some reason, does the electron/photon information highway break down? Or, can you amp up the information highway exogenously in some way (through energy work, homeopathy, or acupuncture) and change the physical state of the gel? Does changing the physical state of the gel have any part in enhancing the informational exchanges that lead to integration of a structure?
I recall reading somewhere in Dr. Rolf’s copious writings that she felt we were not working with the contents of the flow, but with the flow itself5. This raises another question. There has been a move within our SI community to make sure that the energetic paradigm is accepted as part of SI work. My understanding is that some types of energy work affect the flow of energy, such as Source Point therapy, and some types, such as homeopathy, affect the information within the flow. If we are going to accept energy work as part of SI, do we follow Dr. Rolf and limit that work to only making sure the flow is unobstructed, or do we expand on Dr. Rolf’s basics to also include changing the information, the contents of the flow, as some types of energy work do? Or, are we already working with the energy aspect of fascias and do we need to do anything differently than we already are?
The other caveat I have about this theory of energetic communication through the information highway is about how we interpret the information that we receive. It is an interesting thought to suppose that what we call ESP, auras, “reading the field,” energy work, etc., are different expressions of the experience of picking up on this DNA-emitted information stream. If they are, we must be careful. All of our learned knowledge, which includes education, culture, personal history, assumptions, and beliefs, can be filters. This DNA information does not come in directly as words?when the shamans pick it up, it comes as images. It may come to some people as a felt sense or in any number of ways. But it is not logical or verbal. Verbal consciousness is limited to past knowledge, so anything new and unknown has to be described as best it can by using the words and experience we’ve already had. The information we perceive is filtered by our experiential biases; we have to hold this kind of information lightly, for there is much room for misinterpretation!
This idea I’m proposing is that fascias may not only be the organ of form, they may also be the organ of information decoding. They are the matrix that makes information output understandable to other tissues that “read” information differently. In this way they are an indispensable part of information transfer not just within the body but also outside the body. By mobilizing and organizing fascia we might not only be enhancing the structures of our clients, but also their ability to decode and transfer information as well. Correct translation of information from one code to another would seem to have major ramifications for health and well-being.
