ABSTRACT In this in-depth dialogue, Lina Amy Hack speaks with Aline Newton and Rebecca Carli-Mills about the expression “too much body,” which came up in the context of the 2022 Tonic Function Study Group online class exploring the approach of French Rolfer®, Hubert Godard. Together they explore how clients may have become overly focused on their bodies as objects – on shape, symmetry, and control – rather than on embodied experience, relationship with gravity, and the environment. Newton and Carli-Mills emphasize that embodiment is a quality every human has, and perception of our embodiment is not a fixed state but an ongoing process of sensing and relating to the world. Through examples from dance, athletic training, and client work, they show how overemphasis on visual correction and muscular control can interfere with natural coordination and expression.

ABSTRACT “The Missing Gesture” is a preview of a chapter from the upcoming book, Reimagining the Body by Rolf Movement® instructor Aline Newton. Newton is a long-time student of Hubert Godard and presents teachings from his style of movement education. The discussion starts with a case study of an arm injury. The nuance of the expressive gesture is discussed and compared with instrumental movements.

Como corpos, vivemos no campo da gravidade. Em qualquer outra atividade em que estivermos engajados, seja estar sentado e lendo este paper, seja caminhando, ou jogando (playing), nós também teremos de nos manter suficientemente firmes para não cair – teremos de endereçar o problema da puxada da gravidade. Como lidamos com este problema está diretamente relacionado com o que normalmente pensamos sobre o que é postura. What follows is the edited text of The First Annual Ida P. Rolf Science of Rolfing Lecture, given at the Annual Meeting in August 1992. In this talk, Peter looks at some of Rolfers favorite questions like, “What is the core? “; “What is structural integration? and “What was Ida really doing? “.
